Description

Pathogen and disease type. Laricifomes officinalis, commonly known as the quinine conk, is a perennial fungus that acts as a serious wood-decay pathogen. It induces a destructive brown cubical rot within the heartwood of trees, leading to the internal decomposition of the cellulose while leaving the lignin structures temporarily intact.

Affected host plants. The primary hosts for this fungus are various species of conifers, especially Larix, Pinus, and Picea. While it can appear in younger stands under specific conditions, it is most frequently encountered in old-growth forests where trees have sustained prior injuries that allow fungal spores to germinate.

Symptoms and signs. The presence of the fungus is characterized by large, hoof-shaped or columnar perennial fruiting bodies (conks) that grow from the bark. These are typically chalky white, yellowish, or brownish in color. Internally, the wood becomes brittle and crumbles into small cubes, often accompanied by mycelial mats in the cracks.

Development and damage. Infection occurs when spores enter the tree through mechanical wounds, broken branches, or insect damage. The fungus thrives in cool, humid climates. The damage is significant, as it severely degrades timber quality and weakens the structural integrity of the tree, ultimately leading to stem breakage and premature mortality.

Protection and prevention. Managing this fungal disease requires integrated forest health strategies:

  • monitoring the forest canopy for signs of fruiting bodies;
  • conducting sanitary removals of symptomatic trees;
  • protecting tree stems during logging and thinning operations;
  • maintaining healthy stand density to promote tree vigor and rapid wound healing.
