Lasiobolus papillatus is a species of fungi in the order Pezizales, widely recognized for its coprophilous nature. In agricultural landscapes, it typically acts as a saprotroph, colonizing various forms of decaying organic matter, including crop residues and animal waste applied as fertilizer. It is not considered a primary pathogen, but it is an active decomposer.

The fungus targets organic-rich substrates, particularly those exposed to moist conditions. It facilitates the breakdown of complex organic compounds into simpler substances, contributing to the nutrient cycling process in the soil. While beneficial for decomposition, its mass appearance on fields can indicate high humidity and an accumulation of undecomposed organic matter.

Symptoms of its presence include the formation of small, orange-colored, goblet-shaped structures known as apothecia. These structures are often fringed with distinct, stiff hairs that give them a prickly appearance under magnification. They appear in clusters on the surface of manure, damp soil, or rotting plant tissues when environmental conditions are sufficiently wet.

The fungus thrives in habitats where soil drainage is inadequate or where excessive mulching with fresh, uncomposted organic material has been practiced, leading to prolonged surface dampness.

Preventive strategies focus on soil management and sanitation. To manage the presence of this fungus, agronomists recommend ensuring the complete composting of organic fertilizers before application, maintaining proper soil aeration through timely cultivation, and ensuring adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging. Balanced crop rotation is also essential to prevent the excessive accumulation of specific organic residues in the field.
