Lasiodiplodia brasiliensis is a pathogenic fungus recognized as a significant agent in the etiology of tree dieback and canker diseases. Belonging to the Botryosphaeriaceae family, this pathogen is characterized by its ability to colonize woody tissues, leading to systemic failures within the plant structure. Its presence in orchards and nurseries often leads to severe economic losses due to the mortality of established trees.
This fungus exhibits a broad host range, impacting various agricultural and ornamental crops, including grapevines, mango trees, citrus, and hardwood species. The primary entry points for the pathogen are pruning wounds, bark cracks, and damage caused by wood-boring insects. Once the fungus infiltrates the vascular tissues, it can remain latent for extended periods before becoming active under stressful conditions.
The diagnostic signs of infection typically include localized dieback of branches, sunken necrotic lesions on the bark, and vascular discoloration that is visible when cutting into the affected stem. Affected leaves often exhibit chlorosis or wilting, eventually leading to defoliation. In many cases, the affected tree sections become brittle, and in some species, profuse gumming (gummosis) occurs at the site of infection.
