Lasiodiplodia gilanensis is a pathogenic fungus that causes severe tissue damage in woody plants, leading to symptoms such as cankers, lesions, and systemic dieback. It belongs to the Botryosphaeriaceae family, a group of fungi notorious for causing wood-decay diseases in various economically important agricultural crops.

This pathogen primarily targets fruit and nut-bearing species, including fig trees, grapevines, and citrus. The fungus functions as a latent pathogen that can reside in the plant tissues for extended periods, emerging as a destructive agent once the host plant is exposed to abiotic stress or mechanical injuries.

Symptoms typically manifest as dark lesions on the bark, deep fissures, and localized gummy exudates. Cross-sections of infected branches often reveal internal necrosis, characterized by dark discoloration of the vascular tissues. Growers should prioritize the systematic removal and destruction of infected wood to reduce the inoculum pressure. Additionally, minimizing tree stress through balanced irrigation and nutrient management is crucial.
