Description

Lasiodiplodia laeliocattleyae is a fungal pathogen known for causing severe tissue necrosis in various orchid species. As a member of the Dothideomycetes class, this fungus aggressively attacks the plant's vascular and parenchymal tissues, frequently leading to the rapid decay of pseudobulbs and root systems.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are orchids belonging to the Cattleya and Laelia alliance. Given the specialized nature of these plants, the infection can be devastating for commercial growers and private collectors, as it often goes unnoticed until significant internal tissue damage has already occurred.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as dark brown or black lesions on the leaves and stems. These spots are often sunken and may eventually exhibit signs of sporulation, where small black dots (pycnidia) appear on the surface of the necrotic tissue. The progression of the disease is usually accompanied by a soft, mushy texture of the affected plant parts.

The development of Lasiodiplodia laeliocattleyae is heavily favored by warm, humid environments with poor air circulation. The fungus spreads through its spores, which can be easily transported via water splashes, contaminated potting media, or the reuse of non-sterilized pruning tools between different plants.

Prevention and management are centered on maintaining high levels of hygiene. Key practices include:

  • Regular sterilization of pruning tools with alcohol or fire.
  • Ensuring adequate airflow to prevent moisture stagnation on leaf surfaces.
  • Immediate isolation and excision of symptomatic plant tissues.
