Description

Lasiosphaeriaceae is a family of ascomycetous fungi belonging to the order Sordariales. While many species within this group are primarily saprotrophic, breaking down decaying organic matter, some species can act as opportunistic pathogens, affecting plants that are under physiological stress or have sustained mechanical damage.

These fungi impact a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. They typically colonize roots, stems, and lower foliage, especially in environments where plants have weakened defenses. The presence of these fungi is often secondary, following damage by insects, environmental stress, or primary root diseases.

Symptoms of infection include the development of small, dark perithecia (fruiting bodies) on the surface of infected plant tissue. Infected areas often exhibit soft rot, tissue discoloration, and a decline in vigor. In severe cases, the structural integrity of the plant is compromised, leading to wilting and death.

The development and spread of Lasiosphaeriaceae are heavily influenced by high moisture levels and poor soil drainage. High humidity in greenhouses or fields creates ideal conditions for spore germination and colonization. Spores are primarily dispersed through splashing water, wind, and movement of contaminated soil or tools.

To minimize the risk, growers should focus on cultural practices such as improving field drainage, removing plant debris, and maintaining optimal plant health to prevent opportunistic attacks. If chemical control is necessary, targeted fungicides can be used, although focus should always remain on sanitation and integrated pest management strategies.
