Laxitextum is a genus of basidiomycete fungi primarily known for causing wood decay in various deciduous tree species. While these fungi play a vital role in natural forest ecosystems by decomposing dead organic matter, they are classified as pathogens when they invade living trees, leading to white rot and structural failure of the host plant.
The fungus typically attacks broad-leaved trees such as oaks, beeches, and birches. It enters the tree through wounds, such as broken branches, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. Once inside, the mycelium spreads through the woody tissues, secreting enzymes that break down cellulose and lignin, effectively softening the tree's internal structure.
Symptoms of Laxitextum infestation include the emergence of leather-like or thin fleshy fruiting bodies on the bark or exposed wood. As the infection progresses, the wood loses its structural integrity, often turning pale and brittle. In advanced stages, the internal decay can become severe enough to compromise the stability of the entire tree, increasing the risk of mechanical breakage during storms.
Environmental conditions that favor the development of Laxitextum include high ambient humidity and poor airflow. The fungus thrives in neglected stands or gardens where pruning debris is left on the ground, providing a reservoir for spores. Temperature fluctuations in temperate zones often trigger the active growth of the fungus during warmer, wetter seasons.
