Curvularia leaf necrosis is a significant fungal disease caused by various species of the Curvularia genus. As a pathogen, it primarily attacks the leaf tissue, causing localized cell death that manifests as distinctive necrotic lesions. If left unmanaged, the infection can become systemic, severely impacting the host's physiological health and overall vigor.

The host range for this pathogen is extensive, encompassing various grasses, cereal crops, and ornamental plants. Among the ornamental sector, species such as Cattleya orchids are particularly susceptible. For these plants, the disease is a major concern as it can rapidly degrade the aesthetic quality and lead to the loss of valuable specimens in collections.

Symptoms initially appear as small, chlorotic spots that quickly transition into dark brown or black sunken necrotic patches. These lesions often exhibit a distinct halo, indicating active fungal expansion within the leaf tissue. Over time, these spots coalesce, leading to extensive tissue death, premature leaf abscission, and potential dieback of the entire plant structure.

The development and spread of Curvularia are heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and poor air circulation. The pathogen produces spores that are easily disseminated by water splashes during irrigation or by contaminated tools. Consequently, dense planting and warm, stagnant conditions in greenhouses create an ideal environment for rapid epidemic spread.

Effective management requires a combination of strict sanitation and chemical intervention. Growers should ensure optimal air movement, avoid overhead irrigation, and promptly remove any symptomatic tissue to reduce the inoculum load. If the disease persists, application of appropriate fungicides, such as those containing mancozeb or systemic triazoles, is recommended to protect healthy tissues and suppress fungal activity.
