Lecanicillium aphanocladii is a species of entomopathogenic fungus, known primarily for its role as a biocontrol agent rather than a plant pathogen. It belongs to the Cordycipitaceae family and is naturally adapted to parasitize a wide range of arthropod pests that threaten agricultural crops.

The fungus effectively targets various soft-bodied insects, such as whiteflies, aphids, and spider mites. By infecting the cuticle of the host, the fungal hyphae penetrate the insect's body, where they secrete specific enzymes and toxins to consume nutrients and eventually cause the death of the pest.

The primary symptom of infection is the development of visible mycelial growth on the surface of the pest's exoskeleton. As the infection progresses, the host becomes immobile and eventually mummified, covered by the white, fluffy mycelium of the fungus, which then produces spores to perpetuate the cycle.
