Lecanicillium flavidum is an entomopathogenic fungus known for its significant role in the natural regulation of insect populations. In agricultural systems, while it serves as a biological control agent for various pests, it is also studied for its interactions with plants and potential impact on the broader soil and phyllosphere microbiome under specific environmental conditions.

The fungus predominantly affects various insect pests found on tropical and subtropical crops, including coffee and citrus. When the ecological balance is disrupted, or when humidity levels are excessively high, the fungus may proliferate beyond its primary host range, potentially causing physiological stress to plants by interfering with their natural surface microflora.

Symptoms of Lecanicillium flavidum activity are typically identified by the presence of a yellowish-white mycelial growth on the exterior of infested insects. In plants, the symptoms may be less distinct, often manifesting as reduced vigor, stunted growth, or leaf discoloration, which are secondary effects of weakened plant defenses due to the presence of high fungal pressure in the immediate environment.

Development and dispersal are heavily reliant on moisture and temperature profiles. The fungus thrives in high humidity environments (above 85%) and prefers moderate temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Rapid dispersal occurs through conidia, which are efficiently disseminated by wind, rain splashes, and physical contact within the crop canopy.

Effective management and prevention strategies include:

  • maintaining proper plant spacing to improve air circulation and reduce humidity;
  • avoiding excessive overhead irrigation that creates prolonged periods of leaf wetness;
  • judicious use of chemical pesticides that could inadvertently disrupt natural fungal antagonism;
  • monitoring the health of the rhizosphere to ensure plant resilience against potential imbalances.
