Lecanicillium fusisporum is an entomopathogenic fungus widely recognized in modern agriculture as a biological control agent rather than a plant pathogen. It plays a critical role in integrated pest management (IPM) systems by specifically targeting insect populations, thereby reducing the dependency on synthetic chemical insecticides in greenhouse and field operations.
The host range of this fungus includes major agricultural pests such as whiteflies, aphids, thrips, and spider mites. It is highly valued for its ability to regulate insect populations through systemic infection, often proving most effective in high-humidity environments where the fungal spores can easily germinate and penetrate the host's cuticle.
The infection process begins when fungal spores land on the insect's body, germinate, and penetrate the exoskeleton using a combination of mechanical pressure and enzymatic action. Once inside, the fungus colonizes the host's internal tissues, leading to cessation of feeding and eventual death.
