Description

It is a critical agronomic fact that Lecanoromycetidae is not a class of plant pathogenic fungi. Instead, it is a diverse subclass of Ascomycota fungi that primarily function as lichen-forming organisms. They do not induce systemic or localized plant diseases and are considered harmless to the structural integrity of agricultural crops.

These organisms are biological symbionts consisting of a fungal partner and a photosynthetic algal partner. In an orchard setting, they act as epiphytes, utilizing the bark of woody plants merely as a substrate for physical attachment. They derive their nutrients from atmospheric deposition rather than from the host tree tissues.

Symptoms of their presence include the appearance of thalli in various forms: crustose (crust-like), foliose (leaf-like), or fruticose (shrub-like) structures on tree trunks. These growths do not cause chlorosis, necrosis, or wilting, which are typical indicators of true plant disease agents.

The development of these fungi is favored by high atmospheric humidity, clean air (they are often indicators of low air pollution), and long periods of bark stability. They rarely colonize plants that are actively treated with copper-based or systemic fungicides, which effectively limit their growth as a secondary effect of routine crop protection.

While they pose no direct threat, dense colonization of tree bark can be undesirable as it may harbor insect pests. Management strategies are purely agronomic: physical brushing of the bark during the dormant season and the application of lime wash. These practices maintain bark hygiene and discourage the attachment of epiphytes, ensuring a healthier growing environment for fruit trees.
