Description
Lecanosticta brevispora is a pathogenic fungus responsible for causing severe needle blight in various pine species. This disease, often associated with Brown Spot Needle Blight complexes, poses a significant threat to forest health, nursery stocks, and ornamental pine plantings by causing premature needle shedding.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include Pinus sylvestris, Pinus mugo, and Pinus nigra. The fungus tends to attack needles of different ages, leading to severe defoliation. Persistent infections often result in stunted tree growth, increased susceptibility to secondary pests, and potential tree mortality if left unmanaged over several growing seasons.
Initial symptoms include the appearance of small yellow or green spots on the needles, which eventually expand into necrotic, brown lesions. These lesions often become encircled by a yellow halo. As the disease progresses, the needle turns brown and dies from the tip downward, leading to premature needle cast, leaving the branches bare.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, frequent rainfall, and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed through splashing rain and wind, allowing the fungus to infect healthy tissues rapidly during the wet growing season.
Management strategies focus on reducing the inoculum source and creating unfavorable conditions for fungal growth. Key practices include:
- Pruning and destroying infected branches to prevent further spore spread.
- Improving air circulation through proper spacing and sanitation pruning.
- Applying preventive fungicide treatments, such as copper-based compounds, during the spring when new growth is susceptible to infection.
