Description
Lecideaceae is a diverse family of fungi that exist as lichens, living in symbiosis with algae or cyanobacteria. It is a critical agronomic fact that these organisms are not plant pathogens. They do not cause diseases such as rot, blight, or wilting in agricultural crops. Instead, they are epiphytes, utilizing the bark of trees as a physical surface for attachment rather than a source of nutrients.
The morphology of Lecideaceae is primarily crustose, meaning they form a thin, crust-like thallus firmly attached to the substrate. While they may appear to cover large areas of tree trunks, they lack the specialized structures (haustoria) required to penetrate plant tissues and extract plant fluids. Thus, they pose no threat to the vitality or internal physiology of the host plant.
Symptoms often misidentified by growers include the presence of gray, brown, or brightly colored patches on the bark, accompanied by small disc-like fruit bodies (apothecia). While these signs indicate that the tree's surface is providing a suitable environment for colonization, they are essentially bio-indicators of relatively clean air and humidity levels, rather than a symptom of plant pathology or poor health.
The development of these organisms is heavily dependent on microclimatic conditions, such as high moisture levels and long-term exposure of the bark surface to sunlight. They are rarely observed in modern intensive orchards because standard commercial fungicide applications, used to control actual pathogens like apple scab or fire blight, also incidentally prevent the colonization of the bark by lichen species.
Management of Lecideaceae is generally unnecessary in a healthy orchard system. If the presence of these organisms is visually undesirable or if they are believed to be concealing pests (such as scale insects), manual removal is the most effective strategy. Using a soft-bristled brush or a light scraping tool during dormancy can clear the bark without damaging the tree. No specialized chemical control is recommended as it is ecologically unwarranted.
