Description
Lembosia is a genus of fungi belonging to the order Asterinales, which acts as a plant pathogen causing distinctive leaf spot diseases. These fungi are obligate parasites that form small, dark, often crust-like fruiting bodies (thyriothecia) directly on the surface of living leaves of various woody and ornamental species.
The host range for Lembosia includes many different broad-leaved plants, including various species of trees and shrubs found in temperate and tropical regions. The fungus specifically colonizes the leaf epidermis, penetrating the surface to derive nutrients, which ultimately stresses the plant and compromises its physiological functions.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of dark, circular or irregular spots on the foliage. These lesions may be accompanied by a velvet-like texture due to the mass production of fungal spores. If left untreated, the cumulative damage leads to chlorosis, leaf curl, and eventually premature senescence and leaf drop.
