Lembosina leaf spot, caused by the ascomycete fungus Lembosina rhoina, is a parasitic disease affecting sumac trees and shrubs. The pathogen specifically targets foliage, interfering with the plant's metabolic processes and often leading to aesthetic degradation of the plant, which is frequently used in landscaping and ornamental gardening.
The primary hosts of this fungus are various species within the Rhus genus, commonly known as sumac. The infection is particularly prevalent in environments with high humidity and limited air circulation, which are ideal conditions for the fungus to establish itself and reproduce successfully on the leaf surface.
Symptoms typically begin with the appearance of localized spots on the leaves. These lesions are usually dark-colored, transitioning to black as the fungus develops its fruiting bodies, known as apothecia, directly within the leaf tissue. As the disease progresses, the necrotic areas may coalesce, resulting in chlorosis, premature browning, and subsequent leaf drop.
The development and spread of Lembosina rhoina are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as prolonged rain, heavy dew, and high ambient moisture. The fungus overwinters primarily on fallen leaf litter beneath the host plant, serving as the inoculum source for the following season, where spores are released and dispersed by wind and splashing water.
Management strategies focus on sanitation and preventative cultural practices. Removing and destroying fallen leaves is essential to eliminate the primary source of overwintering spores. Maintaining adequate spacing between plants and performing proper pruning improves air movement within the canopy, reducing the likelihood of moisture buildup.
