Lembosinaceae is a family of fungi belonging to the order Capnodiales within the class Dothideomycetes. These fungi are typically found on the surfaces of living leaves and stems of various vascular plants, where they function as epiphytes or weak parasites, often colonizing tissues that have been weakened by environmental stress or insect activity.

The pathogen is characterized by the production of thyriothecia, which are shield-shaped ascomata that develop within the leaf cuticle. These specialized structures are highly resilient, allowing the fungus to persist on the host plant surface and endure unfavorable climatic conditions until humidity levels become sufficient for active growth.

This disease primarily affects woody plants, including trees and shrubs, especially in humid or greenhouse environments. It is frequently observed in association with honeydew-secreting insects, such as aphids, whiteflies, or scale insects, which provide the essential nutrients that facilitate the rapid colonization of the plant surface.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as dark, carbonaceous spots or crusts on the foliage. While these colonies are primarily superficial, they significantly interfere with the plant's physiological processes by blocking sunlight and hindering gas exchange, which can lead to premature leaf senescence and reduced overall vigor of the host plant.

The spread and severity of Lembosinaceae are heavily influenced by environmental factors such as high relative humidity, poor air circulation, and long periods of leaf wetness. In agricultural and horticultural settings, the accumulation of organic debris and moisture within the canopy creates an ideal microclimate for the development of these fungal pathogens.
