The Lentinaceae family consists of fungi that act as significant wood-decay pathogens. In agronomic and forestry sectors, they are identified as the causative agents of various trunk and root rots. These xylotrophic fungi decompose structural components of wood, leading to the gradual loss of mechanical strength and the eventual decline or collapse of the affected trees.
Common hosts for these fungi include a wide range of deciduous and coniferous tree species. In orchards and forest plantations, the pathogen typically targets trees that are stressed, injured, or have undergone improper pruning. Infection occurs when fungal spores penetrate through wounds, cracks, or frost damages on the tree bark, establishing a colony within the woody tissue.
The primary symptoms of infection involve the growth of characteristic fungal fruiting bodies on the surface of the trunk or limbs, often showing a fan-like or funnel shape. Internally, the wood becomes discolored, soft, and brittle, often displaying a fibrous texture as the decay progresses. Externally, this manifests as crown dieback, reduced foliage density, and severe instability of the tree structure.
Development of Lentinaceae fungi is favored by high moisture levels and moderate temperatures, which are common in dense forest areas or poorly ventilated orchards. Stumps, fallen logs, and dead wood serve as primary reservoirs for the fungus, allowing spores to disperse via wind, water splash, or contaminated pruning tools throughout the growing season.
Management and prevention focus primarily on strict sanitary practices, such as the removal of infected trees and the clearing of forest litter or debris that acts as a breeding ground. Pruning wounds should be promptly treated with specialized dressings to prevent entry points. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and pest control is crucial to prevent the establishment of decay fungi.
