Lentinellus cochleatus, commonly known as the aniseed cockleshell, is a wood-decay fungus that acts as a pathogen in various deciduous tree species. Belonging to the Russulaceae family, this fungus specializes in breaking down lignin, which results in a white rot decay pattern within the host's woody tissue. While primarily saprophytic, it poses a risk to weakened or stressed trees.
The host range of Lentinellus cochleatus includes various hardwoods such as beech, oak, and hornbeam, along with occasional infections in orchard trees. The infection site is typically located near the base of the trunk or on major limbs, where moisture accumulation facilitates the colonization of the wood by the mycelium.
Symptomatology is characterized by the appearance of dense clusters of funnel-shaped or ear-shaped fruiting bodies, which are notable for their distinct anise-like odor. Internally, the infected wood undergoes a color change, becoming bleached and spongy as the fungus degrades the cellulose and lignin, ultimately compromising the tree's structural integrity.
Fungal development thrives in high-humidity environments and moderate temperatures. Spores are primarily wind-dispersed, infiltrating trees through mechanical injuries, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. The presence of visible fruiting bodies in late summer and autumn is a reliable indicator of advanced interior wood colonization.
The economic impact of this fungus is significant, particularly in timber and orchard management. The progressive rot weakens the tree, leading to stunted growth, reduced yields, and an increased risk of stem failure or tree collapse during high winds. Early intervention is essential to prevent the spread of the pathogen to neighboring healthy trees.
