Lentinellus micheneri is a wood-decaying fungus belonging to the Russulaceae family. In the field of forest pathology, it is recognized as a pathogen capable of inducing structural degradation in wood. While often acting as a saprotroph, it frequently transitions to a parasitic role on stressed or aging hardwood trees, contributing significantly to forest ecosystem turnover.
The causative agent primarily affects broad-leaved trees. It typically enters the internal structure of the tree through bark wounds, frost cracks, or improper pruning cuts. As a type of white-rot fungus, it breaks down complex structural components of the wood, such as lignin and cellulose, which eventually leads to the structural instability of the trunk.
Symptoms of infection include the emergence of characteristic fruit bodies on the trunk or exposed root zones. Internally, the wood undergoes distinct color changes, typically turning bleached or yellowish with a fibrous, stringy texture.
