The genus Lentinus comprises fungi known for causing significant wood decay, specifically white rot. While some species are primarily decomposers, others act as opportunistic pathogens that target stressed living trees, causing structural instability and economic loss in timber quality.
The disease is caused by basidiomycete fungi that degrade both lignin and cellulose. This enzymatic process systematically destroys the plant tissue, reducing the mechanical strength of the wood and making affected parts highly susceptible to breakage during extreme weather conditions.
Lentinus typically affects deciduous trees, such as oak and beech, but can also infect conifers if the environmental conditions are favorable. The impact is significant in forestry, park management, and the construction sector, where stored timber is vulnerable to decay.
Symptoms include the emergence of fungal fruiting bodies on bark or stumps, internal wood discoloration, and a characteristic spongy or fibrous texture of the affected material. Early detection is difficult, as the internal decay often progresses silently for long periods.
