Description

Lenzites is a genus of wood-decaying fungi in the family Polyporaceae. These fungi are significant agents of wood decay, causing various types of rot depending on the specific host species. They act as saprotrophs, but can also transition to a pathogenic role when colonizing stressed or wounded living trees, eventually causing structural failure in timber and live wood tissues.

This pathogen typically affects a wide range of hardwood species, including birch, oak, and poplar, although some species within the genus are known to attack conifers. In agricultural settings, such as orchards, Lenzites frequently infects mature trees that have suffered from frost cracks, sunscald, or improper pruning, where exposed wood provides an entry point for basidiospores.

Symptoms are identified by the appearance of persistent, shelf-like fruiting bodies (conks) on the bark. A key diagnostic feature of Lenzites is its lamellate (gilled) hymenophore, which is unusual for a polypore. Internally, the wood loses its density and structural integrity, often changing color to a lighter or darker shade depending on the specific decay process (white or brown rot) caused by the mycelium.

The development of the fungus is strictly dependent on high humidity and suitable ambient temperatures. Spores are disseminated by wind and water splash, landing on vulnerable points of a tree. Once the spores germinate, the mycelium colonizes the woody tissue, secreting enzymes that break down lignin and cellulose, thus facilitating the spread of decay throughout the host's heartwood.

Managing and preventing Lenzites requires a proactive approach centered on tree health and hygiene:

  • Prompt removal of decaying wood, including stumps and dead branches, to reduce the spore load.
  • Applying protective wound dressings or sealants to pruning cuts and mechanical injuries.
  • Maintaining vigorous tree growth through proper irrigation and nutrient management to increase host defenses.
  • Monitoring orchards and forests for early signs of fungal fruiting bodies to prevent further spread.
