Lenzites elegans is a wood-decay fungus responsible for causing white rot in various tree species. Belonging to the Polyporaceae family, it functions as a saprotroph that decomposes dead wood but can also act as a secondary pathogen, infiltrating trees weakened by environmental stressors or physical damage.
The host range of this fungus primarily includes hardwood trees such as oaks, beeches, and various fruit-bearing orchard species. It colonizes the wood by producing enzymes that break down lignin and cellulose, which are the fundamental structural components of the tree's vascular system and timber tissues.
Symptoms of the infection are characterized by the emergence of tough, leathery fruiting bodies on the bark or exposed wood, often appearing in shelf-like or fan-shaped formations with a creamy to yellowish color. Internally, the wood undergoes significant degradation, becoming soft, brittle, and bleached, ultimately leading to mechanical failure of branches or the trunk.
Favorable conditions for the development of Lenzites elegans include high ambient humidity and moderate temperatures, which are ideal for the germination of spores. Dense tree canopies and poorly ventilated areas significantly increase the risk of infection, as these environments provide the moisture required for the fungal mycelium to establish itself within the host.
Management and prevention require strict sanitation practices, including the removal of infected wood and dead branches to reduce spore pressure. Properly healing pruning wounds with protective coatings is essential to prevent entry points. Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation is also a key strategy in preventing colonization by this wood-decay fungus.
