Lenzites trabea, currently taxonomically identified as Gloeophyllum trabeum, is a significant fungal species known for causing brown rot in various types of wood. It is recognized as one of the most destructive agents of cellulose decomposition, leading to the rapid deterioration of structural wood properties.
The fungus affects both coniferous and deciduous trees, as well as processed timber in construction, utility poles, and railway sleepers. It is particularly damaging in environments where wood moisture content remains high, facilitating the rapid colonization of the mycelium throughout the timber matrix.
Symptoms of infestation are marked by the presence of woody, bracket-like sporocarps appearing on the surface of the infected material. Internally, the wood undergoes significant transformation, becoming dark brown and brittle. As the cellulose is consumed, the wood cracks into characteristic cubical fragments, indicating severe structural degradation.
Development and spread of the fungus are triggered by favorable environmental conditions, including high humidity (above 20% moisture content) and temperatures conducive to fungal growth. Spores are primarily wind-dispersed, entering the wood through microscopic cracks or wounds. Stagnant air and contact with soil surfaces significantly increase the risk of rapid colonization.
