The genus Leotia consists of ascomycete fungi that are primarily recognized as saprotrophs in wild environments. However, in an agricultural context, these organisms can behave as opportunistic pathogens, particularly affecting the root systems of ornamental plants and woody seedlings under specific environmental pressures.
The causal agent belongs to the order Helotiales. These fungi interact with the host plant by colonizing the rhizosphere and the basal parts of the stem. While they are not classified as obligate parasites, their ability to break down organic matter allows them to encroach upon living tissues when the host's vitality is compromised.
Symptomatology involves the presence of gelatinous, cap-like fruiting bodies appearing at the base of the plant. Infected plants often show signs of chlorosis, reduced vigor, and progressive wilting. The internal tissue of the root collar may show signs of soft rot, impairing the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients.
Development and spread are facilitated by high soil moisture levels and cool, damp microclimates. Poor soil aeration and high content of undecomposed plant material provide the necessary substrate for fungal growth. Dense canopy structures that limit light penetration also create favorable conditions for the development of the fungal colonies.
Effective protection and preventive measures are essential for managing outbreaks. It is critical to maintain proper sanitation by removing decaying organic debris from the planting area. Improving soil drainage to prevent waterlogging is the most effective way to inhibit the establishment of the pathogen. Additionally, maintaining adequate spacing between plants ensures better air circulation and light exposure, which hinders the fungal lifecycle.
