Lepiota (lat. Lepiota) is a genus of mushrooms that typically act as saprotrophs in soil enriched with organic matter. In professional horticulture and greenhouse management, the appearance of these fungi indicates poor substrate quality or improper watering regimes, which can indirectly impact the vitality of cultivated plants.

The fungus develops from spores present in contaminated soil mixes, peat, or non-decomposed compost. Once in the substrate, the mycelium spreads rapidly, consuming organic nutrients and effectively competing with the root systems of crops for essential minerals. This nutrient depletion is a significant factor in plant stress.

Symptoms of infestation are identified by the presence of small mushrooms emerging from the soil surface after heavy irrigation. Beneath the surface, the mycelium forms a dense network that can create hydrophobic patches in the soil, preventing water and nutrients from reaching the root zone of the plant efficiently.

The conditions favorable for the spread of Lepiota include excessive moisture, lack of proper soil aeration, and high temperatures within the range of 20°C to 25°C. Poor greenhouse ventilation often exacerbates these conditions, allowing the fungus to establish itself quickly in the upper soil layers of potted plants.

Preventive measures and control strategies involve strict sanitation practices and environmental management. Growers should prioritize the use of sterilized potting mixes, ensure adequate pot drainage, and maintain proper spacing between plants to improve airflow. If an infestation occurs, removing the top layer of contaminated soil and applying a fungicide targeted at soil fungi is often necessary to restore the growth environment.
