The organism functions primarily as a saprotroph, decomposing organic waste. In the context of agronomy, its growth is problematic because a dense mycelial mat can inhibit water penetration and aeration, creating an unfavorable physical environment for delicate root systems. It does not cause infections in crops, but it competes for space and nutrients in the rhizosphere.
Symptoms of its presence include the sudden emergence of small, brownish-scaled fruiting bodies with distinct gills. These usually appear after heavy rain or in conditions of consistent irrigation.
