Description
Lepiota sublaevigata belongs to the Agaricaceae family and acts primarily as a saprotrophic fungus that can, under specific conditions, exhibit pathogenic properties towards ornamental and garden plants. Although traditionally considered soil-dwelling saprotrophs, their excessive proliferation in the root zone can lead to the suppression of plant growth.
The pathogen is the mycelium of a higher basidiomycete. Unlike typical parasites, this species develops more frequently in soil rich in organic matter, forming colonies that compete with plant roots for moisture and nutrients, while potentially releasing metabolic products that are toxic to sensitive plant species.
The primary symptoms of infestation include the formation of fungal fairy rings or mycelial patches on the soil surface. Plants growing within the area of mycelial spread often display signs of chlorosis, stunted growth, and in severe cases, may perish due to disrupted soil aeration and root system suppression.
The development of the fungus is favored by high humidity, the presence of undecomposed plant residues (mulch), and neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH. The fungus actively disperses through airborne spores and rain splash, as well as vegetatively through mycelial expansion in moist soil conditions.
Control and prevention strategies include the following measures:
- Removal of excess organic matter from the root zone.
- Improvement of site drainage to prevent waterlogging.
- Application of broad-spectrum fungicides upon mass emergence of fruiting bodies.
- Deep cultivation of soil to disrupt the mycelial network.
- Use of biological control agents, such as Bacillus subtilis, to suppress the growth of the pathogenic mycelium.
