Leprocaulon is a genus of lichens that often colonize the bark of trees and shrubs. While these organisms are not pathogens in the traditional sense, they are frequently investigated by arborists and agronomists due to their presence on aging or stressed orchard trees and ornamental plantings.
As a biological entity, Leprocaulon is a symbiotic relationship between fungal and algal components. These lichens do not parasitize the tree; they are epiphytes that use the bark surface for structural support. However, their physical presence indicates long-term moisture and lack of bark aeration.
The most common hosts for these lichens include older fruit trees with rough or decomposing bark. Because the lichen thrives in humid, shaded environments, it often proliferates on the North-facing side of trunks or within dense, unpruned tree canopies.
Symptoms of infestation appear as granular, dust-like, or squamulose thalli on the bark surface. While they rarely kill a tree directly, they can obscure bark damage, act as a habitat for insect pests, and mask symptoms of genuine fungal or bacterial cankers beneath the lichen layer.
Management of Leprocaulon primarily involves improving orchard ventilation through regular pruning and removing excess shade.
