This organism consists of a symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae. It colonizes the outer bark surface to obtain structural support and minerals from dust. While it does not extract nutrients from the plant's vascular system, it can create a moisture-rich microenvironment that may harbor pests or facilitate the growth of harmful fungi and bacteria.

The lichen primarily affects older trees or those with rough, fissured bark. Fruit trees, such as apples and pears, are commonly targeted, especially in stagnant air conditions or orchards with dense canopy cover that lacks sufficient sunlight exposure throughout the growing season.

Symptoms appear as tiny, granular, or powdery grey-green crusts covering sections of the trunk or larger branches. Over time, these patches can expand, creating a thick layer that blocks the bark's natural gas exchange processes, which can eventually impact the overall vigor of the host tree.

Effective management focuses on improving tree vitality and environmental conditions. Essential measures include systematic pruning to ensure proper aeration and sunlight penetration, which discourages lichen growth. For significant infestations, manual scraping of the bark followed by applications of copper-based fungicides or horticultural lime washes is highly recommended.
