Description
Lepteutypa is a fungal disease caused by species within the genus Lepteutypa, which are recognized as destructive plant pathogens. These fungi primarily target the woody parts of plants, causing tissue decay and disrupting sap flow. The pathogen is capable of surviving for long periods on infected plant debris, making it a persistent threat in orchards.
A wide range of woody plants are susceptible to this infection, particularly species within the Rosaceae family. Almond trees, peaches, and various stone fruits are highly vulnerable to colonization by Lepteutypa. Additionally, the disease is frequently observed in nurseries where young, sensitive plants can be decimated rapidly if proper management is not implemented.
The primary clinical signs of the disease include the development of necrotic lesions on the bark of stems and branches. These lesions often appear sunken and may develop cracks or fissures. A common symptom is the exudation of sap or gum (gummosis) from the affected areas. Over time, the bark may peel away, leading to the death of the distal parts of the branches.
The spread and development of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, especially prolonged periods of high humidity and rainfall. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind and splashing water. Furthermore, the presence of pruning wounds or physical injuries from insects provides an entry point for the fungus to establish itself within the host tissue.
Effective control of Lepteutypa requires an integrated management approach. Growers should focus on strict sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infected wood to reduce inoculum pressure. Chemical intervention with copper-based or systemic fungicides is recommended as a preventative measure during vulnerable periods, such as after pruning or during rainy seasons to protect vulnerable bark.
