The fungus Lepteutypa fuckelii is a pathogenic agent responsible for the development of cankers on woody plant species. It belongs to the group of Ascomycetes and acts as a parasite that targets the bark and cambium layers, disrupting the tree's vascular system and causing localized tissue necrosis.
This pathogen primarily affects a wide range of fruit trees and ornamental shrubs. Infection typically occurs through wounds, including those caused by frost, mechanical pruning, or insect damage. Once the fungus enters the host tissue, it begins to colonize the bark, leading to progressive dieback of the affected branches.
Visible symptoms often include sunken, discolored patches on the bark. As the disease advances, the infected area may crack, exposing the underlying wood. The plant often tries to form a callus barrier around the infection, but severe cases result in the total death of the distal parts of the tree as the nutrient and water flow is choked off.
The development of Lepteutypa fuckelii is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain splashes and wind are the primary vectors for spore dispersal, making the disease more prevalent in regions experiencing frequent wet seasons or humid growing conditions.

- Prune and destroy infected branches as soon as symptoms are detected.
- Disinfect pruning tools with alcohol or a bleach solution between trees.
- Apply protective wound dressings or fungicide pastes to significant pruning cuts.

- Ensure proper tree spacing and thinning to promote better air circulation and leaf drying.
