Leptobacilliosis is a fungal plant disease caused by the Leptobacillium genus. As a pathogen, it interferes with the plant's vascular and cellular integrity, leading to significant physiological stress. Understanding the specific life cycle of this fungus is crucial for farmers and horticulturists, as it can exist as a saprophyte on decaying matter before transitioning to an active parasitic phase on healthy crops.

This disease impacts a variety of hosts, particularly in high-humidity environments like greenhouses. Common crops susceptible to Leptobacillium include leafy greens, ornamental flowers, and certain greenhouse-grown vegetables. The pathogen often targets the plant’s soft tissues, where it can rapidly establish itself if the host’s immune response is compromised by environmental stressors.

Initial symptoms are characterized by small, water-soaked spots that eventually develop into necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, these spots often expand, taking on a darker hue with a surrounding chlorotic halo. In advanced stages, the infected plant parts may wilt, become brittle, or show signs of soft rot, especially under constant moisture conditions.

The environmental factors driving the development of Leptobacilliosis include high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 18°C to 24°C. Leptobacillium spores are easily dispersed via irrigation splashing, contaminated farming tools, and sometimes through insect activity. Stagnant air and poor light exposure within high-density planting schemes significantly increase the risk of rapid spread throughout a crop.

Economic damage stems from reduced harvest yields and the degradation of aesthetic or commercial value in produce. Management strategies must be comprehensive to be effective. This involves maintaining optimal plant spacing for better airflow, strict sanitation of greenhouse facilities, and the prompt removal of symptomatic plant debris. Chemical intervention with targeted fungicides should be integrated into an overall IPM (Integrated Pest Management) strategy to achieve the best results.
