The disease is primarily characterized as a soil-borne fungal infection that targets the root system and the crown of the plant. By colonizing these tissues, the pathogen interferes with water and nutrient uptake, causing structural degradation of the roots and eventually hindering the plant's ability to sustain its physiological functions.

Visible signs of infection usually start underground and manifest as darkening or browning of the root system.
