Leptodontidium elatius is a soil-borne fungus that has been identified in plant pathology as a causative agent of root-related issues in various plant species. Operating primarily within the rhizosphere, this organism can act as an opportunistic pathogen. It often persists in soil organic matter and becomes aggressive when the host plant experiences physiological stress or unfavorable environmental conditions.

The host range for this pathogen includes various woody plants, conifer seedlings, and certain agricultural crops grown in nurseries. By attacking the fine root system, the fungus disrupts the plant's vascular integrity. This impact is particularly devastating for younger specimens that rely on a healthy root architecture to establish themselves in the environment.

Symptoms of an infection typically begin below ground, where root browning and necrosis occur. As the disease progresses, the visible effects become evident in the canopy: chlorosis, loss of turgor, and dieback of the branches. In severe cases, the entire plant may wilt as the root system fails to provide sufficient water and mineral uptake to support vital biological functions.

High soil moisture content combined with poor drainage creates a microclimate that allows the fungus to proliferate rapidly.
