Description
Pathogen and disease type. Leptographium procerum is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Ascomycota division. It is the primary cause of a severe root and lower stem disease, often leading to vascular wilt, reduced water transport, and subsequent mortality in coniferous hosts.
Host species. The disease primarily affects pine species, with Eastern White Pine, Scots Pine, and Austrian Pine being highly susceptible. While pines are the most common hosts, the fungus can occasionally be found on other conifers, particularly when they are stressed by environmental factors or drought.
Symptoms and signs. Typical symptoms include foliage chlorosis, which progresses to reddish-brown discoloration and eventual shedding of needles. A definitive sign of the infection is the presence of brown or black resinous lesions and streaks on the cambium layer under the bark near the root collar.
Conditions for development. The fungus thrives in moist soil conditions and areas where trees have sustained root injuries. The spread of the pathogen is facilitated significantly by root-feeding insects, such as bark beetles and weevils, which transport spores directly to the tree's vascular system through feeding wounds.
Impact and protection. Leptographium procerum causes significant economic losses in forest nurseries and plantations due to rapid tree decline. Protection strategies involve:
- Rigorous sanitation, including the removal and destruction of infected trees;
- Management of insect vectors using appropriate silvicultural practices;
- Improving soil drainage to reduce humidity;
- Selecting resistant or less susceptible species for reforestation programs.
