Leptographium pseudotsugae is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Leptographium genus, known for causing significant vascular damage in conifers. This fungus is typically associated with bark beetles, which act as vectors, introducing the pathogen into the tree's inner tissues while creating galleries.

The primary host for this fungus is the Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). While the fungus can thrive in various environments, it predominantly targets trees that are already stressed by environmental factors or are suffering from heavy insect infestations, which provide the entry points for the infection.

Symptoms of the disease include chlorosis (yellowing) and subsequent necrosis (browning) of the needles. A key diagnostic feature is the blue or dark staining of the sapwood, which can be observed upon stripping the bark. This internal staining reflects the disruption of water conduction within the tree, eventually leading to crown dieback.

The development and spread of Leptographium pseudotsugae are highly dependent on the presence of beetle vectors. Environmental conditions such as prolonged drought can weaken the host's natural defenses, making the tree more susceptible to colonization.
