Description
Leptographium rhodanense is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing root infections in various coniferous tree species. As a member of the Ophiostomatales group, this fungus is typically associated with bark beetles, which play a crucial role in its transmission by wounding the trees and creating entry points for fungal spores.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include various species of the Pinaceae family, such as pines (Pinus spp.) and spruces (Picea spp.). Young trees in forest nurseries and recently transplanted saplings are particularly susceptible to the disease, often suffering from reduced growth rates and increased mortality when roots are compromised.
Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as gradual chlorosis (yellowing) of the needles, canopy thinning, and crown dieback. A critical diagnostic sign is the presence of dark, resinous lesions on the root collar and main roots, indicating that the fungus has successfully colonized the conductive tissues of the root system.
Disease development and spread are favored by high soil moisture levels and warm environmental conditions. The fungus persists in the soil and on infected root debris, allowing it to remain active and potentially infect new hosts when root contacts between healthy and diseased trees occur in dense plantations.
Effective control measures require an integrated management approach focusing on prevention. This includes selecting appropriate planting sites, ensuring proper spacing to reduce root competition, and rigorous sanitation practices, such as the removal of infected stumps and deadwood. Monitoring for bark beetle activity is also essential to prevent the secondary introduction of the pathogen.
