Description

Causative agent and disease type. The fungus Leptographium rostrocylindricum is the primary cause of this specific root and vascular disease. It is classified as an ascomycete that colonizes the root systems and conductive tissues of conifers, severely impeding the transport of water and nutrients within the tree.

Host plants. The disease primarily targets various pine species. It poses a significant threat to young nursery seedlings as well as older pine stands, especially those that are already under stress from drought, poor soil conditions, or previous mechanical injury.

Symptoms and signs. Infected trees typically exhibit chlorosis of the needles, which eventually turn brown and fall off. Growth stagnation is commonly observed, followed by top dieback. The roots of affected trees show dark, necrotic lesions and staining within the woody tissue, indicating the presence of fungal mycelium.

Development and spread. Leptographium rostrocylindricum thrives in moist, poorly drained soil conditions. A critical factor in its spread is the association with wood-boring insects, such as bark beetles and weevils, which act as vectors, transporting fungal spores from tree to tree while feeding or nesting.

Harmfulness and preventive measures. The disease can cause extensive tree mortality and economic losses in commercial forests. Control strategies prioritize integrated management, including:
