The fungus Leptographium terebrantis is an ascomycete pathogen responsible for significant damage to conifer species. It is widely known for causing root disease and blue stain in sapwood. This fungus relies heavily on symbiotic relationships with bark beetles and weevils, which act as vectors, transporting the fungus's spores from tree to tree during their boring activities.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are various pine species, including the Scots pine, Weymouth pine, and black pine. The fungus typically targets trees that are already physiologically stressed due to environmental factors, such as severe droughts, soil compaction, or recent mechanical damage to the trunk or roots.

Visible symptoms often begin with the yellowing and subsequent wilting of the pine needles. As the disease progresses, the tree's vascular system becomes impaired, leading to resinous exudation and eventually tree mortality.
