The Leptolegniellaceae family belongs to the class Oomycetes, which are fungus-like organisms that play various roles in ecological niches, from decomposers to aggressive parasites. In agricultural contexts, they are known to cause significant damage to crops, particularly those grown in wet or hydroponic environments, by targeting roots and subterranean tissues.

The disease manifestation typically involves root decay caused by the mycelial growth of the pathogen. These organisms use motile zoospores that navigate through water films to locate host tissues. Once attached, they penetrate the epidermis and spread throughout the root structure, leading to systemic wilting and subsequent plant mortality.

These pathogens predominantly affect vegetable seedlings and hydroponic crops. The susceptibility is highest in environments with saturated soils or nutrient solutions where oxygen levels are low and organic matter content is high, creating an ideal breeding ground for oospore germination and hyphal development.
