Description

Leptomitosis is a plant disease caused by oomycetes of the genus Leptomitus. While these organisms typically function as saprotrophs in aquatic environments, they can become pathogenic to aquatic plants under specific stress conditions, attacking root systems and weakened stems by utilizing organic matter for initial colonization.

The causative agent, Leptomitus lacteus, is characterized by a distinctive branched mycelium that forms white, cotton-like mats on the surfaces it infects. Being an oomycete, its cell walls are composed of cellulose rather than chitin, which distinguishes it biologically from true fungi and influences the effectiveness of standard fungicidal treatments.

Symptoms of leptomitosis typically manifest as a fuzzy, white or off-white coating on submersed plant parts. Affected tissues soon begin to show signs of rot, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and a significant loss of structural integrity. In severe cases, the entire root system may collapse, leading to the rapid death of the aquatic plant.

The development of this disease is highly dependent on environmental factors. An excess of organic nutrients in the water, poor water circulation, and low oxygen levels create the perfect breeding ground for the pathogen. Leptomitosis is particularly aggressive in stagnant water systems where the immune system of the aquatic flora is compromised.

Effective management focuses on environmental hygiene. Removing decaying organic matter from the planting site is the most critical preventative step. Furthermore, ensuring adequate water aeration and managing the nutrient load prevent the pathogen from proliferating. In cases of infestation, affected plant sections should be manually removed to stop the spread of zoospores.
