The causal agent is an ascomycete fungus. It infects the leaf tissue by forming structures known as apothecia, which typically develop beneath the plant's epidermis. As the fungus matures, these structures erupt through the surface to release spores, completing the infection cycle and spreading to adjacent foliage during periods of favorable environmental conditions.
