Leptoporus is a genus of fungi recognized as a potent cause of brown rot in timber and living trees. As a wood-decay pathogen, it specializes in decomposing cellulose, which leads to the structural collapse of affected trees and poses significant risks in forestry and orchard management.
This fungus typically attacks a wide range of woody species, infiltrating the wood through wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks. Once established, the mycelium spreads throughout the heartwood, consuming essential components and compromising the tree's internal architecture, which ultimately results in a loss of vigor and physical stability.
The primary symptom of infection is the transformation of healthy wood into a brown, crumbly mass that breaks into cubes when dry. As the infection progresses, distinctive fruiting bodies emerge on the surface of the trunk or at the base of the tree, serving as visible indicators of the extensive internal damage caused by the pathogen.
The development of Leptoporus is heavily dictated by environmental conditions, specifically preferring humid and stagnant air environments. Dense canopies, low light, and poor air circulation create the perfect microclimate for fungal spores to germinate and colonize host tissues, especially where bark integrity is compromised.
