Leptosphaeria represents a significant group of fungal pathogens belonging to the family Leptosphaeriaceae. These ascomycete fungi are well-known causes of various plant diseases, often manifesting as necrotic lesions on foliage and stems, and are responsible for substantial economic losses in modern agriculture globally.

The host range of these fungi is extensive, severely affecting crops such as oilseed rape, cereals, and various horticultural species. In particular, Leptosphaeria maculans is notorious for causing stem canker, which significantly impacts the development of the vascular system and structural integrity of the affected plants.

Visible symptoms include the development of pale, irregular leaf spots containing numerous small, black pycnidia that serve as the primary inoculum for the next generation of spores. As the disease progresses, stem lesions may become girdled, leading to plant wilting, premature senescence, and ultimately crop lodging.

Disease development is highly dependent on climatic conditions, specifically favoring cool to moderate temperatures accompanied by high humidity or persistent rainfall.
