Pathogen and type of disease. The pathogen is a microscopic ascomycete fungus known as Leptosphaeria castagnei. This fungus causes a disease categorized as leptosphaeria, which primarily manifests as localized necrosis of plant tissues. As a specialized pathogen, it utilizes enzymes to degrade plant cell walls, leading to the formation of distinct lesions on the surface of the host.

Susceptible crops. Leptosphaeria castagnei is typically found on various members of the Poaceae (grass) family. It most frequently infects wild reed species and other related aquatic or semi-aquatic grasses. While it is rarely a primary economic pest in intensive agriculture, it can negatively affect natural habitats and ornamental grass varieties planted in moist environments.

Symptoms and signs of infection. The infection is characterized by the appearance of irregular spots on the leaves and stems of the host plant. Over time, these spots develop small, dark, raised structures known as pseudothecia. These are the fruiting bodies of the fungus. As the disease progresses, the central parts of the lesions may become pale or necrotic, leading to leaf blight and reduced aesthetic or structural integrity of the plant.

Development and spread conditions. The development of Leptosphaeria castagnei is highly dependent on environmental moisture. High humidity and cool-to-moderate temperatures are ideal for spore production and germination. Spores are primarily disseminated by wind and splashing raindrops. The fungus survives the winter season by residing in saprophytic or parasitic forms on infected plant debris, ensuring its survival until the next growing season.

Harmfulness and protection measures. The disease can cause significant defoliation and weakening of affected plants, limiting their vigor and metabolic processes. Effective management strategies involve:

  • sanitation practices, such as removing and disposing of plant debris;
  • ensuring adequate plant spacing to promote air circulation;
  • avoiding overhead irrigation that creates prolonged leaf wetness;
  • applying fungicides if the disease reaches critical levels in ornamental settings.
