Description
The causative agent of this disease is the ascomycete fungus Leptosphaeria derasa, which is primarily known for attacking the stems of various herbaceous plants. This pathogen typically survives the winter period in debris from infected plants, acting as a persistent source of inoculum that can initiate new infections as environmental conditions become suitable in the spring.
The host range includes a variety of herbaceous crops and wild plants, particularly within the Asteraceae family. The fungus demonstrates a strong affinity for stem tissues, invading the outer layers and progressing into the deeper vascular tissues, which fundamentally alters the physiological state of the affected host plant.
Symptoms of Leptosphaeria derasa infection manifest as distinct necrotic spots or lesions on the stems, often showing a dark brown or greyish color. As the infection deepens, these areas become brittle and may display small, dark-colored fruiting bodies known as perithecia, which release spores that facilitate the spread of the fungus throughout the field.
Environmental conditions characterized by high humidity and moderate temperatures are ideal for the rapid development and propagation of this fungus. Stagnant moisture on the plant surface after rainfall or heavy dew creates an optimal microenvironment for spore germination and colonization of new host tissues, especially in dense or poorly ventilated plant stands.
