Leptosphaeria planiuscula is a fungal pathogen classified within the Dothideomycetes class, known primarily for causing necrotic spots and tissue decay on various plant species within the Asteraceae family. As a saprotrophic and pathogenic organism, it typically overwinters on crop debris and senescent plant parts, waiting for favorable conditions to initiate a new infection cycle.
The host range of this fungus is centered on members of the Asteraceae family. It is frequently observed on sunflowers and several types of wild herbaceous plants found in fields and meadows. Its ability to persist in the soil and on crop residues makes it a persistent challenge for integrated pest management in affected agricultural regions.
Symptoms usually manifest as small, dark spots on the leaf blades that gradually expand and coalesce, often surrounded by a chlorotic halo. As the disease progresses, the central parts of the lesions may become necrotic and brittle. Agricultural practices, such as deep plowing to bury infested plant debris and maintaining strict crop rotation schedules, are essential to break the survival cycle of the fungus.
