The disease is caused by the fungus Leptosphaeria sydowii, an ascomycete pathogen known for its ability to persist on crop residues. It operates primarily as a necrotrophic parasite, invading host tissues and causing localized cell death. The pathogen is characterized by its adaptability to various environmental conditions and its survival strategy through resistant fruiting bodies.
The host range of this pathogen includes various agricultural crops, including cereals, legumes, and specific woody plants. It preferentially attacks weakened or stressed hosts, though in favorable conditions, it can spread to healthy, vigorous plants. Understanding the host range is critical for effective field management and preventing cross-contamination between different crop types.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as irregular spots on leaves, stems, and stalks. These spots often develop a necrotic center surrounded by a darker, sometimes chlorotic, margin.
