Description
The disease is caused by the ascomycete fungus Leptosphaeria tanaceti, which primarily affects plants within the Asteraceae family. This pathogen is responsible for a specific leaf spot disease that disrupts the physiological functions of the host plant. It is considered a significant threat to the production of medicinal and aromatic Tanacetum species.
The primary host for this fungus is the common tansy (Tanacetum vulgare). The pathogen invades the vascular tissues and leaf surfaces, causing systemic weakness in infected specimens. Once the fungus establishes itself, it interferes with the plant’s ability to photosynthesize effectively, resulting in stunted growth and diminished concentrations of essential secondary metabolites.
Symptoms initially appear as small chlorotic lesions on leaves, which rapidly evolve into dark necrotic spots. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often surrounded by a distinct halo, and eventually develop dark, granular structures known as pseudothecia. Severe infestation results in premature yellowing of foliage and total necrosis of the leaf blades.
The lifecycle and dissemination of Leptosphaeria tanaceti are highly dependent on moisture levels. Rain splash and wind-blown conidia are the primary modes of transport for the pathogen. Humid environments, coupled with poor ventilation in dense crop stands, create an optimal ecosystem for the fungus to replicate and spread across a field.
Management of this disease requires a preventative strategy starting with sanitation. Removing plant debris at the end of the season is critical, as the fungus overwinters in this residue. Additionally, growers should ensure proper spacing to increase airflow, reduce humidity, and utilize targeted fungicide treatments if the infection risk is high. Continuous monitoring is essential for early detection.
